SAN DIEGO – Arrests for suspicion of drunk driving were up this year compared to last both countywide and statewide for the Christmas holiday, but the number of fatalities reported was down, the CHP said.

For the 12-hour period between 6 p.m. Christmas Eve and 6 a.m. Christmas Day, 11 people in San Diego County were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, compared with nine people for the same period in 2014. The CHP said there were no fatalities reported for the time period in either year.

Statewide, there were 156 arrests for suspicion of drunk driving in 2015 compared with 142 in 2014. Fatalities reported statewide in 2015 were five, compared with six in 2014.

For the 36-hour period between 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 6 a.m. today, there were 22 arrests in San Diego County for suspicion of drunk driving compared with 18 arrests a year ago. One fatality was reported in San Diego County in 2015, one fewer than the two reported in 2014.

Statewide, the differences in the number of arrests for suspicion of drunk driving for the same period was more pronounced, with 350 reported  in 2015 compared with 285 last year. A total of 10 fatalities were reported by the CHP this year compared with 15 in 2014.

Arrest numbers for suspicion of drunk driving were only those made by CHP officers. Fatalities reported were for all law enforcement agencies.

The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways and on all roads in unincorporated areas.
